I was so honored that Matt and Molly chose me to photograph their wedding reception because they are photographers themselves - and I was also a little nervous for the same reason, but they were the perfect clients, letting me just do my own thing!

Now enough about me, M+M romantically eloped to the wine country a little while back but once the families found out, this romantic outdoor reception at a local equestrian center was put into motion.

Brides Regret Not Spending More on Photos

By Mark Lutz + Thursday, April 15 According to this survey 22% of brides felt they did not spend enough money on their photographer.

Well there you have it! Right there in black and white. Good photography is worth paying for but 22% of Brides don’t realize it until after the wedding is over. What the heck can we do about that?
Online printer/image host/publisher Shutterfly released their most recent survey results today and amongst a few worthless facts (like blue is color of the season) there was some valuable information.

Should’ve spent less on the dress; more on the memories. Of survey respondents married within 12 months prior to the survey, 28 percent felt they didn’t spend enough money on the honeymoon; 22 percent felt the same about the photographer. 19 percent of the same sample reported spending too much on the bridal gown and food.

So this either means that 22% of the surveyed brides either wanted more product or there are a bunch of hack wedding photographers out there who aren’t living up to brides expectations. Interesting food for thought no matter how you look at it…

I must give myself a little extra credit for this wedding. The groom is a rockstar, so I'm not naming names on this one, but the brides zipper broke and it somehow came down to yours truly to fix the situation. Armed with needle and thread, I sewed her up tight. Later on when the lights went out at the reception, I saved the show by pulling out my video lighting. Hey, always happy to save a wedding when I can!

I just love this shot from one of my last weddings - I had to shoot through the slats of a gazebo, which created the fuzzy edges. And this image made me think about how putting the ring on the bride's finger really is The Moment.

In her own words, here is Carolyn’s story about how she shot her award-winning images which won second place in the Bride or Groom Alone, (right) and second place in the June Humor category :

Second Place Bride or Groom Alone
“Although we were next to a golf course there were busy backgrounds all
around us, so I used a 200mm lens and a low angle to keep the background clean. I also used the low angle to make the groom look larger than life,
which always makes the grooms happy! I usually tell grooms to pretend they are a GQ model and then I get that nice pensive look.”

Here is what the judges had to say: “Good modeling, good light and the power angle works well here.” Another judge commented “He looks like he should be in a magazine. Very slick and put together.” And out third judge said He’s placed in a nice context–architectural hints in the background add interest to the photo.”

Second Place Humor
Carolyn said “If you can’t beat ‘em, join ‘em (or shoot ‘em!) Everyone has their
cameras out all the time, so I love to turn around and get shots of those guests. Of course this one is a little different because the person behind is hidden, so it seems this guest has four arms with four cameras.”

Here is what one of our judges from the Hallmark Institute had to say about Carolyn’s photo: “This is weird and unexpected. This is something that you see a lot at a wedding but is rarely photographed.”

Cassandra was at the doctor yesterday, where the doctor informed her that it was time to induce and get that baby out! Oh no, we hadn't done the photo shoot yet! She talked the doctor out of it and bought herself a couple more days. I just love that the pictures were that important to her.

We almost cancelled this shoot, it was so grey outside, and cold and windy. It's a bummer not to get that sunset shot, but with that trade off you get a certain romanticism. And it's nice when there's no one else brave enough to be on the beach!

And I'm off....to Paris!

This trip has a lot of meaning. First of all, it was exactly 20 years ago that I packed my little suitcase in Mokena, Illinois and flew to Paris to start my modeling career. It was a heady time. It was important to me to go back to Paris this year to mark the occasion. When you are a model, you don't officially retire and get the gold watch from the boss, so this is my own little way of retiring.

Next off, I am proud to announce that I will be 40 in September! I am finally a woman :)
This will be an early celebration marked with lots of great wine, food and dancing.

And finally, Bruno and I have been hoping to have a child for many years. We will meet with a specialist in Paris that may be able to help us. Wish us "le bonne chance" (luck!)

Peter and Michelle - Part One

Peter and Michelle tied the knot (for the second time) today - and oh what a beautiful day! I wanted to share a couple favorite shots, but I will definitely post more as I get to editing. Peter's quite handsome and Michelle is model-pretty.

I did a double take when I saw our photos because they looked like something from a high-end fashion magazine. You have an amazing eye and are extremely talented. I am typically shy and I instantly felt comfortable around you as you have a warm and endearing personality. Fiona had her last photo shoot back in September, but I am putting together a book for her and wanted to share this. Can you believe, nearly every baby I've photographed has given me the finger? It's their way of telling me the photo shoot is over, time to pack up and go home.

I crossed paths with Chris & Maureen at a charity function quite a while back - I was auctioning off a photo session, and Chris was auctioning off....himself. Okay, a day of golf with him, specifically. If you know me, you know sports are not on my radar so I was amazed to see people bidding so much money to hang out with Chris for an afternoon.
But then they called me soon after for me to photograph their engagement session, and that's when I learned Chris is Chris Kunitz of the Anaheim Ducks. That's ice hockey, if you need further explanation.

Fast forward to last month when Chris surprised gorgeous - and very pregnant - Maureen with another photo session. It truly is a joy to be part of such important events in peoples lives.

I just learned about this one woman show called Bridezilla Strikes Back!

I have been so fortunate that none of my former clients have
deserved the label "Bridezilla" - and honestly, if someone wants
to be a Bridezilla, what does it matter to me? I'm there to capture
the moments, whatever they may be.

But if you've ever been a bride or plan to be one, this could be a fun
show! I am going to go with a group of female wedding photographers, so
our cocktail conversation afterwards should be pretty interesting!

Here's an article today from the L.A. Times - if you are trying to keep your costs down for your wedding, you are certainly not alone. The upshot is you will probably find more value for your dollar if you are planning a wedding for this year or next.

Wedding budgets, for richer or poorer
A new poll reveals that many respondents are scaling back on their plans, with 25% slicing their budgets in half. Wedding planners recommend cutting back on invites.

Does anyone hear just one wedding bell? That's right, even brides-to-be are reevaluating their budgets in this recession. About 25% of couples plan to slice their wedding budgets in half, and 1 in 10 intend to cut back costs by 75%, according to a nationwide survey recently released by retailer David's Bridal. Does that mean open bar for just 20 minutes?

The "What's on Brides' Minds" poll also revealed that 53% do not plan to spend more than $25,000. The Assn. for Wedding Professionals estimates that in 2008 the average wedding cost $21,000 to $24,000, though the Assn. of Bridal Consultants puts the figure closer to $35,000. A significant 34% of brides-to-be have a much lower figure in mind, telling pollsters that they do not plan to spend more than $10,000 on a wedding.

The wedding industry has always had the brides by the veils when it comes to costs, but maybe the cake tables are turning? Clearly, the planners, DJs, caterers and florists will also have to make adjustments to meet the needs of couples on a budget.

"They're offering more value instead of modifying their prices. For instance, a photographer recently added another album to a lower-priced package," says Harmony Walton, founder of the Bridal Bar, an L.A. boutique that offers free consultation on local vendors and all things wedding-related. "I'm also seeing more invitation designers offering promo codes for 10% off."

Over at SellMyWeddingDress.com, a used -- once, presumably -- Vera Wang size 8 gown of tulle and satin that sold originally for $4,800 is priced at $1,500. And there are alternate routes to outfitting. I spent a mere $175 on my vintage 1970s Mexican wedding dress, which I found downtown at Shareen Vintage. (My splurge was on Valentino platform peacock sandals instead.)

At the end of the big day, experts agree that cutting the head count is the best way to save money. Fewer fourth cousins means fewer tables, which means fewer peony centerpieces. Even the wedding planner becomes less expensive. "Most consultants base their fee on how much a wedding costs," says Jean Picard, California state coordinator for the Assn. of Wedding Consultants. "For some, it may not be the time to have dinner and dancing for 300 of your father's business associates."

And if a scaled-down wedding just doesn't appeal, here's a recession-proof proposal: "Honey, will you elope with me?"

On a recent trip to New York I was staying with friend Nim. We wandered over to the World Trade Center site, a place that he walks past daily. I had been to the site many times since the attacks, but always forget how wide and deep that hole is. I frustratingly could not capture with my camera an image that would show the magnitude of it. I was overcome with grief. Then I looked behind me to find Nim, in his NYC hat, in a New York state of mind.

How do I say this in a good way? Heather and Jason are like brother and sister. In a good way!
What I mean is they are one of those couples where you can't imagine one without the other. It's like they are one person. Like Brangelina. Let's call them Heathson.
If I gave out a "most sweet and relaxed couple of the year 2008", they would be top contenders for sure. Oh, they'd also be up for "most romantic and unique location" (Bowers Museum in Santa Ana, CA).

I was shooting a wedding in Arizona yesterday, and as I was setting up the bridal party for some formal portraits, this balloon flew in from out of nowhere - changing the course of our photo session!
